About New Renaissance Collective: The Alchemist
The New Renaissance Collective is a cross-arts theatre company, bringing music and text together through physical theatre. This project reimagines Ben Jonson's farce, The Alchemist, for a contemporary UK during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rehearsed, shot and edited entirely under quarantine conditions, this video creates the illusion that performers are in the same location, and transposes Jonson’s 1610 comedy into the contemporary world of coronavirus, get-rich-quick schemes, and institutionalised dishonesty. The Alchemist is the pilot production for its new series of ‘NRC Shorts’, a series of short online videos beyond its programme of live productions.
