Following 12 hugely successful foreign language productions, critically acclaimed musical is to get its English language premiere in a new production. ‘Rebecca’, by Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay, two of the most successful German-language musical theatre composers, had its world premiere at the VBW-theatre Raimund Theater in Vienna, Austria, in September 2006, where it went on to play to sold-out houses in three seasons, and where it is currently enjoying a successful revival. In Rebecca, wealthy Maxim De Winter brings his naïve new wife home to his Cornish estate, Manderley, where the manipulative housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, resents the new wife’s intrusion. She persuades her that she is an unworthy replacement for the first Mrs. De Winter, the glamorous and mysterious Rebecca, who perished in a drowning accident, with tragic results... The world-famous novel was also turned into a celebrated Alfred Hitchcock film in 1940, starring Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, Judith Anderson, George Sanders and Gladys Cooper. It was nominated for 11 Oscars, winning two awards; Best Picture and Best Cinematography. Age Recommendation: 12+
Rebecca, the musical based on the Daphne Du Maurier novel of the same name, will have its English language premier in 2023. Rebecca comes to London’s Charing Cross Theatre next autumn, where it is set to grip London audiences just as it has done all over the world. Dark, seductive and unsettling, Rebecca is an unexpected musical theatre experience and one that you’ll think about for years to come.
Just like Daphne Du Maurier’s classic novel, Rebecca invites audiences into the world of Maxime de Winter’s young and naïve new wife. Brought back to Maxime’s stately Cornwall estate, the new Mrs de Winter finds her happiness disturbed by a shadowy presence – and a name…
Rebecca is the classic dark love story that has delighted and thrilled audiences for generations, now a spectacular new musical. Young and inexperienced, the young heroine of our story is working as a paid companion in a hotel in Monte Carlo in 1926 when she meets Maxime de Winter, an aristocratic bachelor who sweeps her off her feet. The two are soon married, and headed back to Maxime’s estate – the dreamy, shadowy Manderley.
However, once established in Manderley, the new Mrs de Winter finds herself unsettled by the ever-present memory of Maxime’s first wife, the beautiful and beloved Rebecca. Shunned by the staff, gossiped about by friends and neighbours and growing distant from her new husband, Mrs de Winter finds herself growing more and more unhappy, and more and more resentful of the drowned Rebecca. After all, if Rebecca is still present in every corner and corridor of Manderley, then how dead can she truly be?
Based on Daphne Du Maurier’s 1938 novel, Rebecca will keep audiences on the edge of their seats – just as it has kept readers on the edge of theirs for over eighty years. Featuring an orchestra of 18 and 22 original songs, Rebecca is set to be a completely immersive, spine-tingling theatrical experience.
