Winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, it’s surprising that Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey’s musical hasn’t been seen in the UK until now. Telling the story of an American family trying to deal with trauma and the mother’s bipolar disorder, it’s a hard-hitting, emotionally complex show, but one that, despite its darkness, triumphed over other more feel-good productions on Broadway in the Tony Awards. So, the Donmar, which has often tackled more challenging musicals, should be an ideal home for it, with Caissie Levy starring as the suburban mum dealing with mental illness and loss.
