About The Woman in Black

Robin Herford’s gripping production is a brilliantly successful study in atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror. Celebrating over three decades in the West End, Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation of Dame Susan Hill’s best-selling novel tells the story of a lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over his family by the spectre of a ‘Woman in Black’. He engages a young actor to help him tell his story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It begins innocently enough, but as they delve further into his darkest memories, they find themselves caught up in a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds. Age Recommendation: 12+

Little wonder it’s been a fixture in the West End for more than three decades. The Woman in Black, London

The Woman in Black is at London’s Fortune Theatre. Adapted for the stage by Stephen Mallatratt, the plot has lawyer Arthur Kipps believing that he and his family are under a mysterious curse, as he is haunted by visions of a malevolent woman in black. Trying to escape her evil spell, Kipps hires an actor to enact his experiences and eject all thoughts of The Woman in Black once and for all. At first it appears his plan has worked and that he has cured his obsession, but soon Arthur and The Actor find themselves in a very strange place indeed.
