About Stefan and Friends

Forty years ago this August, a young Stefan Bednarczyk received his first professional pay cheque (from Newsnight for performing ‘The Dinosaur Can-Can’, since you ask) An Evening of Jake Thackray: Tuesday 16 August & Friday 19th August, 7.30pm A new show devoted to the great Yorkshire chansonnier Jake Thackray. Active from the mid 1960s to the early 1990s, Thackray’s body of work should be widely celebrated. Bernard Braden said of him “..he’s a satirist with both bite and compassion. There aren’t very many of them around.” And Alan Plater summed up his art: “Jake’s work doesn’t ignore the sadness, the melancholy, the loss, but in the end chooses to look the other way, and say let’s laugh at it, because it’s all a big joke.” The Elements of Tom Lehrer: Wednesday 17 August, 7.30pm Whether you’re poisoning pigeons in the park, doing the Vatican rag, or remembering your periodic table, there’s no situation in life that can’t be made better by the great American songwriter Tom Lehrer. Catchy tunes and pin-sharp lyrics combine in this perennially popular show. A Night with Noel Coward – Guest starring Janie Dee: Thursday 18 August, 7.30pm Join Stefan and the Olivier Award winning Janie Dee for an evening of Noel Coward’s finest songs – hilarious and poignant in equal measure. Turned Out Nice Again – Guest starring Anne Reid: Saturday 20 August, 3.30pm & 7.30pm Following the success of their recent show Just in Time in tribute to Comden & Green, Stefan reunites with celebrated actress Anne Reid (The Last Tango in Halifax, Sanditon) for their latest show Turned Out Nice Again – a celebration of songs and stories inspired by the weather, Irving Berlin wrote “Its a lovely day” , and Harold Arlen & Johnny Mercer wrote “Come Rain or Come Shine”
