Intense, compelling and coruscating, the play cleverly muses about the existence of an authentic ‘me’, particularly one struggling to emerge because it has never felt truly seen. Addiction alters how the brain works; the physical symptoms can be addressed but whether the ‘me’ that emerges is a true one is moot. The self flaying in the face of an uncaring universe and then the flaying of the self in the face of rejection are brutal. Anchored by a virtuosic central performance, some reveals in the final sections draw genuine gasps. Self-acceptance of our messy selves is the only solution.Read more →

This production offers nuance and intelligence, lively and fractious arguments, moments of gentle reflection, harrowing admissions and stony refusals to forgive. Helped by sharp and snappy changes to lighting states and sound, the tightly choreographed cast move the scenes along at a lick. Gough, (whose central journey as Emma requires her to remain on stage for almost the entire show), is on dazzling form and receives rock solid support from Sinéad Cusack as both the clinic’s doctor and therapist (and later in the penultimate scene as Emma’s mother), and Malachi Kirby as Mark.Read more →

I think given the hype it was very disappointing. The acting was great, but I don’t think the story was developed, and the characters lacked depth. I am not sure what’s the reason to put this on stage - why? why now? The mataphor of acting/world being a theatre/wearing masks had potential but it just ended up being pretentious. If anything, rather than giving voice to people with mental health issues I felt those stories were exploited for entertainment (all the effects, etc.)Read more →

One of the best things I’ve seen this year. Denise struck a chord deep within me—bawled my eyes out. It’s raw, it’s real, it’s hilarious. A vivid slice of life.Read more →
