MJ The Musical tells the story of Michael Jackson as he was at one specific moment in time. In 1992, Michael is preparing to embark on the Dangerous World Tour, and he is characteristically overflowing with ideas. However, those around him warn that Michael’s vision and ambition could result in some very real financial and practical problems. There’s no doubt that Michael is pulling together an incredible tour – but will it ever live up to his own impossible standards?
MJ The Musical has a score made up of 25 of Jackson’s biggest and best hits, including ‘Beat It’, ‘I’ll Be There’, ‘Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough’, ‘Billie Jean’, ‘Smooth Criminal’, ‘Black Or White’, ‘Thriller’, and ‘Man in the Mirror’. Going beyond Jackson’s sound, style and signature moves, it tells audiences an insightful behind-the-scenes story about the creative process of one of the greatest ever minds in music.
The MJ musical London cast is yet to be announced. On Broadway, the role of Michael Jackson was originated in 2021 by Myles Frost, who won the Tony Award for Best Performance By A Leading Actor In A Musical.
MJ The Musical is directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon OBE. Wheeldon is a Royal Ballet Associate Artist who has choreographed many ballet shows and has also been recognised for his work on An American In Paris. He was nominated for Best Direction Of A Musical at the 2022 Tony Awards for MJ The Musical and won the Tony for Best Choreography.
MJ The Musical has a book by Lynn Nottage, the first and only woman to have won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice. She won first in 2009 for her play Ruined, and later in 2017 for Sweat. She has also been the recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship.
MJ The Musical also features scenic design by Tony winner Derek McLane, lighting design by six-time Tony winner Natasha Katz, and costume design by Tony winner Paul Tazewell. Its score, of course, comes from Michael Jackson himself.
