About War and Peace

Welsh National Opera brings David Pountney’s new production of Prokofiev’s War and Peace to the Royal Opera House this summer. With all the love, heartbreak, drama and death of Tolstoy’s novel, this ambitious production portrays the grandeur of 19th-century Russian society through epic sets, video projections and stunning costumes. Like the novel, the opera presents personal and political tribulations, including the love-triangle between the spirited Natasha, her idealistic friend Pierre and her betrothed Andrei – all set against the backdrop of Napoleon's armies edging closer to the Russian border in 1812. Tomáš Hanus, Music Director of Welsh National Opera, conducts a unique version of Prokofiev’s original score, complete with stirring melodies and music for opulent dances.
