Stopping off in London’s leafy suburbs before it hits the Harold Pinter Theatre and the West End at the end of the month, Ivo Van Hove’s English-language version of his epic stage adaptation of Hanya Yanagihara’s novel stars James Norton as the damaged and enigmatic Jude, whose ability to deal with intimacy has been destroyed by his experiences of abuse. Van Hove’s European staging was seen in Edinburgh last summer with subtitles, and it was brutal, bruising, and heartbreaking. Very long too, but utterly compelling. It’s a show in which you must go with the flow, and that flow carries you into whirlpools and eddies that offer an increasingly complex portrait of a man whose experiences have made him unknowable—even to his closest friends. The result is an evening that is sometimes both unbearable to watch and also feels like a privilege. The UK cast is stepping into some very big shoes, but if they fill them, this will be one of the theatrical events of the year.
Following record-breaking demand at Harold Pinter Theatre and previously at Richmond Theatre, Ivo van Hove’s acclaimed production of Hanya Yanagihara’s million-copy bestseller will play a further 5 weeks at the West End's Savoy Theatre. The limited run starts on 4 July.
