Theatremaker Travis Alabanza was walking across Waterloo Bridge when someone shouted "tranny" and threw a burger, which hit them. Not one of the 100 passersby said anything or stopped to help. As Alabanza puts it, "silence burns." But out of that silence comes a fiercely funny and often emotionally searing 80 minutes that encompass a cookery demo, a history lesson about thousands of years of trans and non-gender conforming bodies, and a reminder of the everyday violence faced by many on the streets. How they travel through the air. How the mayonnaise feels on your skin. Burgerz is the climax of their obsession – exploring how trans bodies survive and how, by them reclaiming an act of violence, we can address our own complicity.
