Theatremaker Travis Alabanza was walking across Waterloo Bridge when someone shouted "tranny" and threw a burger, which hit them. Not one of the 100 passersby said anything or stopped to help. As Alabanza puts it, "silence burns." But out of that silence comes a fiercely funny and often emotionally searing 80 minutes that encompass a cookery demo, a history lesson about thousands of years of trans and non-gender conforming bodies, and a reminder of the everyday violence faced by many on the streets. It is a piece that puts its faith in theatre as an act of activism. This is its final iteration; don’t miss it.
After someone threw a burger at them and shouted a transphobic slur, performance artist Travis Alabanza became obsessed with burgers. How they’re made, how they feel, and smell. How they travel through the air. How the mayonnaise feels on your skin. Burgerz is the climax of their obsession – exploring how trans bodies survive and how, by them reclaiming an act of violence, we can address our own complicity. This is the final run of a performance that is as timely, unsettling and powerful as ever. Hackney Showroom presents Burgerz by Travis Alabanza. Age Recommendation: 14+
