About 2020: Collection 2

Hear intimate stories of love, politics, tragedy, family and even football as the international becomes local in these specially commissioned new work from 12 writers in the UK and around the world. 2020 is performed in three collections across three weeks, each presenting four stories. A New America by Reginald Edmund A retired Black soldier’s convenience store business finally finds some success, until it’s razed to the ground by racists. Set against the backdrop of a tumultuous and divided country, A New America confronts the difficult reality for so many Black Americans and the rallying power of community. Lockdown & All That by Carlo Kureishi and Hanif Kureishi A poetic, playful piece exploring a father and son relationship through the eyes of the father as he reflects on life, politics and loss over a game of chess. The Monster Inside by Asif Khan A confrontational piece that lays bare the daily conflict of an exhausted, angry and demoralised NHS Doctor. Enraged with himself for feeling tired, but equally incensed with the world for the pressure he is under to deliver healthcare and safety to patients without the resources to do so. Tales of the Past by Yuqun Fan The Chinese new year is upon us, the florists have run out of Chrysanthemums, and traffic is back to pre-Covid levels. With the world looking at China and blaming them for recent events, what does this mean for the everyday person who wants to enjoy their freedom and spend time with loved ones as they did before?
