The elderly look back on their past in Shadows, a piece from the always interesting Norwegian writer Jon Fosse in which children voice the memories and thoughts of those who whose lives are drawing to an end. Fosse has talked, like Lorca, of a play being like “a poem standing up” and Shadows takes place in an abstract space and uses video projections of children, an eerie presence as the elderly actors perform silently on stage. Kari Holtan’s production has been seen at festivals across the world and arrives in London for just four performances.
