Based on a true story, NEWSIES is set in New York City at the turn of the 19th century. Experience the rousing tale of a ragged band of teenage newspaper sellers, who dream of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. After newspaper magnate Joseph Pulitzer hikes up the prices for his papers charged to the newsies, Jack Kelly rallies his fellow newsboys in an attempt to protest the change, falling in love with young reporter Katherine along the way. These young newsies from across the city come together and rise up against the exploitation of wealthy publishing tycoons and fight for justice using the only power they have – solidarity. Adapted from the much-loved Disney Movie (starring Christian Bale, Bill Pullman and Robert Duval), the original stage production of NEWSIES opened on Broadway in 2012 and played over 1,000 performances before touring and winning two Tony Awards®, including Best Original Score. This original production was filmed live on stage and released in cinemas in 2017. Newsies follows the story of Jack Kelly and his gang of newspaper sellers – the city of New York’s ‘newsies’. The year is 1899 and Jack and his friends are making their living from selling newspapers to the cities residents. But times are tough, and they dream of a life off of the streets, in homes of their own. When the powers that be – moguls Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst – make a call that cuts the newsies’ pay even further, the gang decides that it’s time to fight back.
The call goes out to newsies across the city and before long the boys are presenting a united front. Jack and his friends decide that that a strike might be the only way to protect their livelihoods and show those in charge that they’re ready for a fight.
Newsies is an adaption of the beloved 1992 Disney film of the same name, starring Christian Bale, Robert Duval and Bill Pullman.
