Miranda describes Hamilton as about "America then, as told by America now” casting non-white actors as the Founding Fathers and historical figures to reveal the incredible rags to riches story behind the stateman who now features on a $10 bill.
Born in the Caribbean Alexander Hamilton leaves the island of Nevis to seek his fortune with little else but his own oratorical skills. He quickly becomes George Washington’s right-hand man, falls in love twice, once with the wrong woman, and is present at key moments in the war of independence, falling in and out of favour with successive presidents in a whirlwind musical journey through American history.
Leading the Hamilton cast is Reuben Joseph as Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton. Shan Ako is Eliza Hamilton, Roshani Abbey and Allyson Ava-Brown are Eliza’s sisters: Peggy and Angelica Schuyler. Jake Halysey-Jones is Hamilton’s friend and fellow revolutionary John Laurens, and Simon Anthony Rhoden is friend and later rival Aaron Burr, Trevor Nicholas is George Washington, and Joel Montague is King George.
Hamilton is directed by Thomas Kail, book, music, and lyrics are all by Pulitzer Prize, Emmy, Tony and Grammy award-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda. Andy Blankenbuehler is the choreographer, and Alex Lacamoire is orchestrations/ co-arranger. David Korins is scenic design, Howell Binkley is lighting design, and Nevin Steinburg is sound design. Costumes are by Paul Tazewell and Chris Hatt is musical director.
