Iphigénie en Tauride is widely regarded as an operatic masterpiece, and one of Gluck’s most important works. The story follows Iphigénie and her brother Oreste, born into the Greek dynasty. Their inheritance is owed to a legacy of violence. The sister journeys to an abandoned temple, whilst the brother is on the verge of madness. The distance between them sparks questions of whether the other is alive or dead, but they both dream of the day they are reunited. A mysterious stranger washes up on the lonely island, seeking Iphigénie with news of her family’s downfall.
