Starring Olivier Award-winning Beverley Knight as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the roof-raising ‘godmother of rock ‘n’ roll’, who influenced countless musicians from Elvis to Johnny Cash.
Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the trailblazing "godmother of rock 'n' roll," inspired many generations of musicians, from Elvis through to Johnny Cash.
This vibrant, heartfelt portrayal of Sister Rosetta and her devoted singing partner, Marie Knight, brings these musical pioneers straight back into the limelight as one of the most groundbreaking duos in music history.
Set in 1946 Mississippi, Sister Rosetta has remodelled gospel music with her energetic, electric guitar style. Having been rejected by conservative churchgoers for performing in nightclubs and embracing rhythm and blues music, she convinces the devoutly religious young singer Marie to join her on a tour through the racially divided southern States. But first, she must turn Marie’s pure Sunday sound into something with a bit more groove.
Marie and Rosette features a collection of uplifting rock and gospel classics like Didn’t It Rain and Peace in the Valley, with live musicians accompanying Olivier Award-winning West End star Beverley Knight (known for Memphis, The Drifters Girl, Sylvia, Sister Act) in the lead role of Rosetta Tharpe.
George Brant, an award-winning American playwright renowned for works like Grounded pens the script for Marie and Rosette with direction from Monique Touko, the 2022 Stage Debut Award winner for Best Director, whose acclaimed works include The Boy at the Back of the Class, School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play, Wedding Band, and G.
