About Mary Page Marlowe

90 minutes. 70 years. 11 scenes. 5 Marys. From troubled family dynamics and painful divorces to alcoholism and quiet resilience, Mary’s journey is told through a series of powerful vignettes that span her lifetime. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tracy Letts’ deeply moving portrait of a woman's inner world makes its long-awaited London debut this autumn. Mary Page Marlowe - a poignant, time-jumping exploration of identity and quiet resilience - receives its UK premiere at The Old Vic. The cast is led by Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking) and Oscar nominee Andrea Riseborough (Matilda the Musical) in the complex title role.

The Story Unfolds: Origins and Evolution

Mary Page Marlowe is a quietly radical piece of theatre, tracing the fractured life of an ordinary woman across decades. Written by Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy Letts, the play unfolds not in chronological order but as a mosaic of moments - some fleeting, others seismic - that together reveal the complexity of Mary’s inner world. At The Old Vic, this UK premiere dives into the ways a single life can contain contradictions, regrets, reinventions, and quiet resilience. Far from a linear biography, it’s a haunting meditation on choice and consequence, motherhood and identity, told through a shifting lens that resists easy answers. Each scene offers a glimpse into a different version of Mary - sometimes vulnerable, sometimes defiant - inviting us to consider how much of ourselves is fixed, and how much can be lost or reclaimed over time.

Behind the Scenes: Crafting the Spectacle

Spanning 90 minutes, 70 years, and 11 scenes, Mary Page Marlowe is a bold theatrical mosaic, brought to life through a non-linear structure that captures the complexity of a single life unfolding over time. Susan Sarandon and Andrea Riseborough portray Mary at different stages, with further casting to be announced. This UK premiere follows acclaimed productions at Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago and Off Broadway in New York. It also marks the first production in Matthew Warchus’ final season as Artistic Director at The Old Vic. In a striking transformation, the theatre’s 200-year-old auditorium has been reconfigured in-the-round, placing audiences on all sides of the stage. The result is an intimate, immersive setting that draws viewers into Mary’s world, amplifying the emotional weight and immediacy of her story.
