About Clarkston

From Oscar-winning writer Samuel D. Hunter (The Whale) comes Clarkston, a powerful new West End drama. Starring Joe Locke, Ruaridh Mollica and Sophie Melville, this emotionally rich story explores friendship, love and belonging. Directed by Jack Serio.

The Story Unfolds: Origins and Evolution

Clarkston is a moving new American drama by Samuel D. Hunter, the Oscar-winning writer of The Whale. Making its UK premiere this autumn, Clarkston follows Jake, a young man on a soul-searching journey west, who finds unexpected connection during a night shift at Costco with fellow worker Chris. Set in a small American town built on pioneer dreams, this modern frontier story explores loneliness, friendship, love and the hope of renewal.

First performed in 2018 as part of a double bill at New York’s Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Clarkston is now set to make its West End debut in a limited season. Known for his honest and deeply human writing, Hunter has also penned A Bright New Boise and A Case for the Existence of God.

Behind the Scenes: Crafting the Spectacle

The Clarkston West End production is directed by Drama Desk Award-nominee Jack Serio, reuniting with Hunter after their acclaimed New York collaboration on Grangeville. WhatsOnStage Award-winner Joe Locke (Heartstopper, Agatha All Along) leads the cast, making his West End debut alongside rising star Ruaridh Mollica (Sebastian, The Franchise) and Sophie Melville (The Way, Iphigenia in Splott).

Clarkston is produced by Craig Balsam, Patrick Catullo and Daniel Neale. The intimate three-hander promises an emotionally powerful theatrical experience, grounded in richly drawn characters and sharp, compassionate storytelling.
