About Katsura Sunshine: Rakugo

Hilarious. Charming. Traditional. Universally funny and yet so very Japanese. Canada's very own. Japan’s adopted son. Katsura Sunshine brings the art of Rakugo (Japanese storytelling) comedy to Leicester Square Theatre for the second consecutive year. Rakugo is a 400-year-old tradition of comic storytelling in Japan. A minimalistic performance art, it features a lone storyteller dressed in kimono, kneeling on a cushion who, using only a fan and a hand towel for props, entertains the audience with a comic monologue followed by a traditional story. In order to become a storyteller one must undergo a strict traditional apprenticeship for three years, where one is with the Master every waking hour, does housekeeping and chores, and learns the craft slowly through observation and imitation. Last year designated “Sell Out Show” at the Edinburgh Fringe, Sunshine performs 10 shows at the Leicester Square Theatre before moving to New York off-Broadway.
