As wonderful as Brie Larson was and as beautiful as the music and harmonies sounded… this play was a bit pretentious and cringeworthy in how it mixed too many elements for one to take in. It was hard to take it seriously, when it took itself so seriously.Read more →

Looking at the other reviews I was honestly expecting the worse. It was a good piece of theatre, not brilliant, but I feel it did capture the essence of Greek theatre at its core, although some of the technical sound effects where too much for me personally. The one thing I found outstanding was the chorus, and I would say it is worth going to see it for them alone.Read more →

It felt like it was directed by a 6th form drama student with too many clever ideas and not enough engagement with the text or context. Ultimately I just didn’t care about the characters whereas when Ive seen the play before I haveRead more →

Raw, powerful, fast paced and angry. Very experimental and thus not for everyone. Brie Larson a real powerhouse, with Stockard Channing delivering an impressive performance. Elektra’s rage is believable, her grief is palpable. Some really unconventional approaches used to amplify Elektra’s voice (literally and figuratively) throughout the play. I can understand why some people would be turned off by them, but we’ve enjoyed the play quite a bit.Read more →

This Elektra is definitely in her own head: practising with the declaratory insistence of the teen the case against ‘the parents’ with verbal mannerisms and tics from spending too long talking to herself, distorted amplification when required and a comforting supporting chorus echoing her self justifications. Clytemnestra resembles a stately elderly duckling; Orestes a latter day James Hunt high on racer’s adrenalin. So this version has a distinct style and a certain power even if at times it tries a bit too hard. As for the blimp 🤔.Read more →

The play is too much, even though it’s only 75 minutes long. It lacks structure, and most of the time, the artistic choices were hard to understand — or even explain. It felt like the creators were trying too hard to put a fresh spin on a classic, but unfortunately, it didn’t work.Read more →
