The cast is first rate; however, the performance was given an added frisson as the Vanya was indisposed at the last minute, and with a no understudy policy, Pete Ashmore stood in with a few hours notice, and armed with a script he gave a masterclass in acting technique. However, with the best will in the world, with the hard work in rehearsal of Nunn and the ease of the rest of the cast in scenes where Vanya was not key, when he was at the centre of things one realised how much work had gone in to the nuance of each of their respective performances.
