Although didn't get a chance to see Ian McKellen, his understudy David Semark was entertaining. Richard Coyle's King Henry IV demonstrated a well-executed character development and conveyed the character's illness with great intensity. Particularly noteworthy was the scene featuring the crown in bed, which emphasised the consequences of **** for power, and Coyle's poignant portrayal of desperation as his son took the crown from him. This moment was staged thoughtfully. The opera by Jenkinson added an enigmatic quality to the production. Very good.Read more →

This is a fine slick good-looking production of a condensed version of the two Henry the 4th plays in what could be a long night but really flies by. The Henry father and son are really well played, but towering over all is Ian McKellen on what is probably one of the greatest Falstaffs one is likely to see. Thrilling.Read more →
