This is probably the best play of the year. The transition of a Greek tragedy to a modern setting worked perfectly. It’s an exceptionally beautiful play: the acting was incredible, and the audience could feel how deeply the actors lived through the fates and tragedies of their characters. The set design was magnificent, meticulously crafted down to the smallest detail. There are dire warnings from the theatre staff of no readmission should anyone leave the auditorium during the two hour performance. Frankly these are rendered ridiculously unnecessary by a production that is utterly gripping from beginning to end with two magnetic central performances, a splendid supporting cast and an updated text of lapidary precision in using ancient stories to illuminate the psychological ruptures of our own age in which lies and imposture are the currency of political success and truth is a concept freighted with contention.Read more →
