This play is something very different from what I expected. It’s light, full of laughter and love during the first part. The second one though brings so much cruelty and hatred that it feels like a completely different story. Wildly misjudged, partial updating which is unmoored in time and falls between all stools: coarsening the language and the subtleties of the source whilst failing to do anything interesting with a change of context. Some non sequiturs are draw dropping, verging on the hysterics of a farce. The characterisation fails badly: the malcontent Bosola lacks the insidious nature of a warped character playing with evil, the cardinal is ludicrously on the nose and Ferdinand is a poor man’s Rafe Spall styled psychopath. The Guardian review was right. People left during the second half and I was not surprised. The positives? The staff was extremely nice and helpful (shoutout to the stage door girl, I love her). Paul Ready played brilliantly and was a total sweetheart in person, however, even he wasn’t able to make this show work.
