Musicals really aren't my thing but this was sensational, much in the way that Girl From The North Country stepped away from the genre standard. It's hard to find much that's not to love about this; great set, fabulous band, strong cast (including the chorus), and additional musical numbers to the 2010 studio album. Having had the original album for years I did wonder how the production would compare and I think it surpasses it. The blend of voices is quite amazing. Special mentions to Andre De Shields and Amber Gray for providing extra cool and sass as Hermes and Persephone. GO !Read more →

This wasn't particularly my cup of tea but it was a birthday present for my papa who absolutely loved it - which was great and made it worth it. For me, it ran a bit long and was fairly dischordant (I usually prefer my musicals with jazz swing and tap!) and difficult for me to enjoy properly BUT the set was amazing and the use of light (especially the floating lamps) was really good. I enjoyed Hades' bassy voice and the band were excellent. Not especially my thing but an excellent production and I can see why people enjoy it, and why it’s heading to Broadway 🔥🔥🔥Read more →

I bought a ticket for this show with no contextual knowledge about the story or the music, yet I left wanting a fully realised soundtrack to be released! Eva Noblezada was truly captivating, her portrayal of Eurydice was extremely vulnerable yet tough which complimented Orpheus so well. The ensemble were incredibly strong, and the atmosphere of the cast combined with the always-present band was really fiery. I got some Hamilton vibes in terms of the use of the revolve and the use of the ensemble, but in a very good way! More differences than similarities.Read more →

Very faithful to the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, this ‘rock-opera’ has many great operatic precursors. This production is closer to ‘Girl from the North Country’ which stormed the Old Vic and West End last year. Everything was well done, the performances excellent and in a couple of cases outstanding, and the whole enjoyable. The score, however, apart from a few catchy anthems, did not quite hit the spot and as a result what could have been a movingly tragic ending was a little predictable and let the audience off the hook. Nevertheless entertaining.Read more →

Pretty imaginative and very well staged by the always impressive crew at the National Theatre. The songs are excellent. Perhaps the main actor’s voice is not quite the right fit; though this may just be my personal preference. Most of the performances are excellent. Some more orchestration would have helped give some songs an extra sparkle, particularly the bigger songs. And it does suffer from the perpetual curse of any musical where the song that will save the world is the weakest of the bunch. This is all nitpicking though - and excellent night.Read more →

Music’s fab; but as a show attempting to enkindle a raucous, gig-like feeling in its audience, there’s no way that it should have been in the Olivier — the size of the space makes the performer-audience distance to great to achieve that. Some fantastic staging, but also some thoughtless staging. Hades was marvellous, Persephone seemed tired; Orpheus has a weird breathy rock-affectation (but a phenomenal falsetto), but Eurydice was excellent, with a beautiful voice. Overall disappointing waste of excellent musical material.Read more →

Engaging dance numbers and great lighting but the combination of Greek mythology and folk opera was not to my taste. Didn’t care for the story, struggles to get past the characters names and just didn’t care. I found the riding revolve set annoying and distracting and much of the choreography too happy clappy. Songs were quite good if a little meandering. Not my thing.Read more →

Haven’t seen a new musical this good for a long time. I wasn’t expecting such a well staged and choreographed show - I already knew the music having downloaded it. All the leads were great. When I grow up I want a voice as low as Hades. Not sure what broadway will make of it, but it’s a worthy successor to Springsteen.Read more →

Truly wonderful show where every element is flying on all cylinders - musicality, set design, performances, choreography, book and lyrics. Manages to be nostalgic, timely, political and romantic all at once. A proper crowd pleaser with something for everyone and something to say. Broadway, you’re gonna love it!Read more →

A personal favourite, I saw it three times. That’s how much I loved it. I’ve been waiting for a year for this musical, since I fell in love with the live off-Broadway album. And I was not disappointed, at all. The music in this show is so powerful and the cast is great. A mesmerising and moving show.Read more →

This is unlike any musical that I’ve ever seen and I loved it. The characters are wonderfully played, captivating the audience from the very beginning. The music takes a little getting used to, but once you do you’re hooked. Unconventional and impressive, I would thoroughly recommend.Read more →

Fresh score and mainly fantastic cast sing through essentially a studio album. The set is highly imaginative and effective, and the show feels extremely original. Although it can’t help feeling like a concert at times, going from track to track instead of story beat to beat.Read more →
