Wasn’t prepared for beat poetry recital, handsome James McAvoy with no change to his face & general streetness of it. Once I got over that, enjoyed a lot more & every scene with James was excellent, particularly where he becomes Christian’s mouthpiece with his improv. Not sure it’s as clever as it thinks it is, bit of a Hamilton-esque feel about it which was a little cringey&some bits felt like a poetry jam night... Having said that, the female beatboxer was great(!) & worth it just for James. He made me believe (in the end) that he was ‘****’: shows how powerful imagination can be, when inspired 🎤Read more →

The central conceit of using the rhyming dexterity of rap as a contemporary version of the verbal curlicues of the original play is a good one. But the effect can be grating when it loses the wit and warmth of the original in a blunter, harsher rendition. The piece also feels very, very long (not helped by a warm theatre) and the second half is a relatively dull affair with the siege of Arras struggling to come to life and the climactic scene losing its quiet power in favour of a crescendo of limited impact.Read more →

The performance was excellent, on every aspect. The cast was brilliant, the use of poetry, slam poetry and rap to contextualize the original play, the use of light and space... modern, smart and powerful. Loved it. Saw it twice, gonna see it again for sure. AMAZING AMAZING SHOW. And James McAvoy... don’t even get me started. He was EXTRAORDINARY. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen, definitely the best show in London right now.Read more →

Nothing short of phenomenal. A hilarious, creative adaption that manages to capture the essence of the original heartbreak and humour with a perfect 21st century twist. A real work of art, and an encapsulation of all that is right with modern day theatre. The language is enticing, McAvoy is electric, and overall the show is painfully gripping. The added diversity, and versatility of the cast made it even more enjoyable.Read more →

James McAvoy was absolutely brilliant and the main reason for 4 stars. Minimalistic stage design took it way too far and felt like a cost cutting measure more than a conscious choice. Trying waaayy too hard to be “woke” and “in with the times” - it’s admirable when plays try to stay relevant, but hitting the audience with a hammer over the head to make a point is cringy.Read more →

Extraordinary update and rewrite whilst at the same time stripping t bare and going straight to the poetry. Remarkable to see a mostly young audience sitting in rapt silence listening intently to verse. And McAvoy is really charismatic and joined by a diverse characterful cast. Unmissable.Read more →

Bare stage, no props, little interaction between actors... only words and wit for this contemporary take on Cyrano where poetry meets rap. Solid acting, good laughs from the audience. Excellent evening.Read more →

Interesting adaptation. The second half lacks movement. Seriously though James is way too pretty to play this part, can’t you at least give him a fake nose make-up?Read more →

James McAvoy was absolutely fantastic and leads a brilliant cast. The simple set design does not detract at all from the story and I would happily see it again!Read more →

Phenomenal performances throughout. The show is never static and the words trip and flow from the script in such rhythm you get lost in the prose. I adored it!Read more →
