The central conceit of using the rhyming dexterity of rap as a contemporary version of the verbal curlicues of the original play is a good one. But the effect can be grating when it loses the wit and warmth of the original in a blunter, harsher rendition. The piece also feels very, very long (not helped by a warm theatre) and the second half is a relatively dull affair with the siege of Arras struggling to come to life and the climactic scene losing its quiet power in favour of a crescendo of limited impact.Read more →
